Toddler Room

In the Toddler room, we have 10 toddlers (between the ages of 16 months to 2 1/2 years old) and 2 teachers. Lots of love and security is a very important part of the Toddler room.

Children at this age are just learning how to socialize and sometimes have difficulty sharing. Parallel play is the first stage that Toddlers engage in, followed by learning to play cooperatively. Sometimes they become frustrated in their play with each other, and the Toddler teachers are there to assist the children in acquiring the social skills they need to play cooperatively. Toddlers are learning and discovering their world at their every turn and the teachers facilitate this learning process through planned and spontaneous activities throughout the day.

Toddler Goals...

  • To establish and maintain a safe and healthy environment
  • To foster competence in young children that is fundamental in developing self-esteem
  • To establish positive and productive relationships with families
  • To support emotional and social development and provide guidance
  • To enhance and nurture children's development in a variety of ways

Programming and Activities...
Curriculum planning serves several purposes:

  • It helps teachers understand and plan the program according to children's daily experiences.
  • It helps to analyze the needs of the developing young child and supports the need for an individualized curriculum.
  • It helps to identify sequences of change in all areas of development (physical, emotional, cognitive, language, and social).

Behaviour Management...

  • To provide constant supervision of all children, never leaving them unattended
  • To establish and define expectations for group and individuals
  • Using appropriate language and voice level
  • To provide positive reinforcement
  • To be firm and consistent for expected behaviour
  • To encourage problem-solving and decision-making
  • Show respect for the children by acknowledging their feelings and responding appropriately.

Toileting Routine...
The toddlers' diapers are changed at least 4 times a day, approximately every 2 1/2 hours and as needed. Children are introduced gradually to the 'potty' or toilet training procedure upon their readiness. Parents are asked to continue with the procedure at home to establish a routine. Children need to wear clothes that can be removed quickly and easily, and are asked to bring a lot of extra clothes for all those unexpected accidents.

What You Need to Provide...

  • A bag of diapers - a minimum of 5 diapers are used a day, and diaper cream if needed

At least 2 sets of extra clothes, shoes or slippers

  • If toilet training, at least 2 pairs of pants, underwear and socks
  • Special cup or bottle if needed
  • A comforting toy, and a special blanket for sleep time
  • Proper seasonal clothing:
    • Spring: light jacket, rubber boots and a hat
    • Summer: light clothing, hat and sunscreen
    • Fall: light jacket, boots and a hat
    • Winter: snow jacket, snow pants, hat, scarf, mittens, and boots

What We Will Provide...

  • Nutritious hot foods - morning and afternoon snack, plus lunch (11:15-12:00)
  • Cots and sheets (all sheets and blankets are washed once a week and when needed)
  • Fun and age-appropriate activities and toys
  • An enriched, attractive, and safe environment to allow freedom of play.

Sleep Routine...
Sleep time in the Toddler room is 12:15-2:15. At this age, children can establish sleep routines by themselves. They lie down in their bed with their own blankets, while soft music is playing. A teacher is always available to comfort them during naptime and when they awaken. When children wake up early, they can choose a quiet activity while their friends are sleeping, such as puzzles, colouring, or looking at a book.

Medication Policy...
If the children have prescribed medication, parents are asked to fill out a medication form. Medicine must be in its original bottle with the proper labelling. This should include the child's name, the Doctor's name, starting date, and instructions.

Accident Report...
In case of minor injury, teachers are trained to apply first aid and to inform the supervisor. An accident report is completed to inform the parents about the accident details and parents are asked to read and sign the report. In case of serious accident, parents are notified immediately.

We are always available for any questions or concerns you may have about the program or your child. Please do not hesitate to go to any of the Toddler teachers.
