Senior Room
In the Senior room,
the teachers work together to provide fun and learning for 16 children
between the ages of 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 years old. They use themes that are
age-appropriate in development and are enjoyable for the children. Activities
such as field trips to farms, museums, and other places of interest provide
new and different experiences.
Senior
Goals and Objectives...
- Problem-solving:
to teach the children how to solve their own problems.
- To build
children's self-esteem.
- To provide
challenges: provide new and interesting materials.
- To promote turn
taking and sharing: teach co-operation through turn taking and sharing
with each other.
- Respect for each
other: teach the children to respect each other's space.
What the
Children Need for Daycare...
A smooth transition to our room and the daycare is important to us;
therefore, we suggest your child bring a favourite
stuffed toy or blanket to comfort them on their first week. A complete change
of clothes in case of accidents (such as wet pants, spilled milk or juice, or
just having fun playing in the water) is needed at all times. When preparing
your child for daycare, the following is required:
- Summer - light
clothing, sunscreen and hat required
- Spring & Fall
- jacket, boots, and hat
- Winter - hat, scarf,
mittens, snowsuits, and boots
Programming...
In the
Senior room, we try to teach the children skills in all areas of development in
a way that the children will enjoy their time spent with us. Language skills
are learned through rhymes, songs, and stories during circle time. You will
notice your child coming home with new songs and stories to tell you. The
rest of the day, the children spend time in a variety of areas which provide
materials to help them learn new things and build upon their existing
knowledge.
Learning
Centres...
The dramatic centre, block centre, science centre, puzzles, sensory,
creative, and quiet activities are open at all times for the children to
experience independently.
- Circle Time: The children will
increase their language skills by being given the opportunities to speak
freely, learn songs, and talk to their peers through Show and Tell.
- Fine Motor/Cognitive:
The
children will enhance their cognitive and fine motor skills through
visual discrimination with colours:
identifying shapes, classifying objects, understanding number concepts,
comparing length and sizes, and practising how
to print letters and numbers.
- Dramatic Play: The children will
develop their social skills through interacting with others, expressing
their feelings, controlling feelings, co-operating, and sharing with
others, as well as developing social awareness, self-concept
development, relationships with parents and adults all through role
playing.
- Block Centre: The children will
enhance their gross motor and fine motor skills by manipulating the
blocks and floor toys, as well as learning co-operative play with peers.
- Sensory Area: The children will
have fun experiencing pouring sand and water, flour, salt, and other fun
materials. They will also experience the taste and feel of foods and
other sensory materials.
- Science and
Nature Centre: The children learn to recognize the similarities
between humans and plants, e.g. we drink water and so do the plants.
Through hands-on experiences, the children will also learn how things
change and why.
Washroom
Routine...
We endeavour to teach the children independence and
sanitary practices during our washroom routine. We deal with toileting
accidents in a respectful manner by reassuring the child that this can happen
to anyone and it is nothing to feel embarrassed about. We will make light of
the situation and hope the child follows our lead. Extra clothes brought in
every day will help in not diminishing a child's self-esteem.
