Kindergarten Room

Welcome to the Kindergarten Room! We have 20 children from 4 ½ - 6 years old. Most of the children in this program attend Junior or Senior Kindergarten at an elementary school.

The Kindergarten program is developmentally based. The expectations that are placed on a child are of an individual nature. They are also appropriate for his or her stages of development. Through positive speech, direction and encouragement, children will develop confidence, curiosity and self-discipline. This will aid in the child's social and emotional development. Our program is balanced to provide the child with a variety of experiences in all the areas of development cognitive, social-emotional, language, creative and physical each day.

On The First Day...
On the first day please bring in the following:

  • Blankets
  • Soft toy
  • Extra clothes at all times (for those messy & creative activities)

Clothing and shoes are clearly marked with a permanent marker with your child's name to avoid having articles misplaced.

Dressing For Outdoors...
The children at Genesis Community Daycare play outdoors a minimum of 2 hours per day. The prime values for the outdoors activity period are to allow the children to feel and enjoy fresh air, and to practise their individual gross motor skills. It is also important that the children are dressed appropriately for that time of year:

  • Summer - light clothing, hat, and sunscreen
  • Spring/Autumn - jacket & hat, boots
  • Winter - snowsuit, hat, scarf, mitts and boots

Goals for the Program...

  • To assist the children in learning how to work in cooperation with their peers and as individuals.
  • To assist the children in learning about rules - why we have them, how they are made, how they are changed and how to follow them.
  • To assist the children in learning about the things in the world around them: that everything has both a purpose and a place.
  • To assist the children in learning about respecting the rights of others.
  • To increase the children's knowledge of and use of language words and the processes and objects they represent.
  • To assist the children in acquiring a sense of wonder, anticipation and excitement about learning.

Routines...
Snack - Snacks are served in the morning and in the afternoon.
Lunch - Lunch is prepared on the premises and is served at
12:00 pm, with wash up time before lunch.
Toileting - The children are encouraged to be as independent as possible when using the bathroom. A staff member will supervise and assist the children during this time. If children require assistance removing clothing etc.
Rest - The children have a rest period and quiet time between
1:00-3:00.

Monthly Calendars...
Monthly calendars are sent home every month. These monthly calendars inform you of the themes of the month, the events for each day. Show and tell/ Movie Day is every Friday. Please bring in toys and movies that are suitable and appropriate for young children ('G rated' movies).

Learning Centres...
The Kindergarten room's daily program and their Time Management Board, allows the children the freedom to explore the various learning centres that have been prepared with their interests and abilities in mind. These centres are changed daily, weekly or in accordance with theme changes.
Each day in the Kindergarten room is special. There are enough materials and equipment that all the children can be busy at the same time in different areas. The centres are set up to encourage the children to explore, make friends and become self-confident. In the Kindergarten room we have several learning centers - Science and Discovery, Sensory Area, Quiet Activities, Gross Motor, Role Playing, Art and Creativity,
Reading and Writing.

Science and Discovery - Computers, books, shells, magnet, plants, scales, magnifying glasses, containers, items for counting, measuring devices, rocks, dirt, etc.
Goals: To assist the children in developing an understanding of "basic" mathematics through active experimentation. Through both planned and spontaneous interaction with real objects (plants, animals, rock, soil, water and other naturally occurring materials), to develop each child's curiosity about the world around him and the various phenomena and materials in it.

Sensory Area - Water table, wet sensory (water, shaving cream, etc.), dry sensory (sand, oatmeal, rice, etc.), funnels, water wheel, sand mold, cookie cutters & rollers, etc.
